Right after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan for forty days and nights, yet overcame it victoriously. An Orthodox monastery stands at the top of the Mount of Temptation above the city. Joshua cursed Jericho in the Old Testament in original Hebrew language; today it is known as the ‘city of dates’ and boasts one of the finest date marketplaces in the world.
